30 Day Blogging Challenge: Magic the Gathering Day Five

So Magic the Gathering is a game, the collectible card game but I think most of you reading this know that already. I played way back when the Revised Edition was the main set. I was probably a senior in high school at the time. When they started changing rules and taking certain cards out of print I stopped playing and eventually I needed a large chunk of cash for a new car and I cashed in my collection and never looked back. 

23 years later my son and I were looking for a hobby to share. Something that we could do and enjoy together. That is when I found the game again. We bought a Duel Deck and had a ton of fun with that for two weeks and then found a local game shop and are enjoying not only playing but building up a collection of cards.

As a way to commemorate my return to the game and his beginning in the game I found a 30 day MTG blogging challenge and I want to share that with you all here.

With that being said:

Day Five Favorite UN-card

I was not playing the game with the UN-sets were released. I believe the first one came out in 1998 and I remember one of my buddies talking about it. Of our play group he was the best player and he would go on to win a tournament or two while he was still playing. Through him I sort of get abreast of some of what was going on in the MTG world. He got a bunch of UN=cards at a tournament or something I remember seeing them then and thinking bleh.

My local LGS store has a complete set of one of them. Which one I have no idea and they were funny to read and hilarious I suppose but really I just don’t get the point. When I am the store looking in the case my mind is engaged on whatever deck I am trying to fix. I don’t like to be distracted. I much less like to be distracted by something I consider to be quite silly. But that is me…I am old.

I suppose that means my favorite UN-card is none of them. Not my cup of tea.

With that being said:

Day Two: Least Favorite Color

Over the years I played Magic the Gathering and then now months I have gotten back into it I have played a mono colored deck in each of the five colors. While playing those mono decks there were certain cards I loved from the time I cracked them in a pack or bought them out of a display case because I thought the would be useful. Like all other magic players there are certain cards I have an affinity for; goblin cards and their awesome and often times hilarious flavor text, Nightmare has long been my favorite black card, Serra Angel was an awesome White card in its day, and who doesn’t love blue Clones or Doppelgangers.

Savvy MTG players will notice that there is a color I did not mention there. Which brings me to green. For some reason I have never developed a strong connection to the green way of doing things. There are a ton of great green cards and it likely produces the biggest creatures in all of magic (before the Commander format at least). Green is all about growth and making its big things bigger or making its smaller things medium. I understand its color philosophy and yet I do not enjoy playing it as much as the other colors. That is really  the great thing about this game in that I can craft my own experience in it and that experience is forever evolving.

A few months ago when I got back into the game my son and I bought the Ob Nixilis versus Nissa duel decks. I asked him what color he wanted and he picked black. So there I was once more playing a color that didn’t really feel like me. We still had a blast with it and we wore them two decks out in a little under two weeks. It was a ton of fun even though I was playing with my least favorite color. That says a lot about this game’s construction.

As soon as I had a big enough pool of cards to build my own decks from I moved away from green. I do still have a blue/green deck that I am starting to like…I still prefer to play without green.
