30 Day Blogging Challenge: GoT Day Three

It feels like forever since I have had any new Game of Thrones to watch…or any new A Song of Ice and Fire to read. In little over a month we all will get the seventh season of the hit HBO show. I am betting we will not get the last two books until the show has completed its run in 2018. I hope I am wrong about that but more and more it feels like that is what is going to happen. That means for now the show will be the officially unofficial canon of Westeros will be the show. As a writer I am not super happy about that but as a fan I just need my GoT fix already.  To help satisfy that need I embark upon a 30 day blogging challenge about Thrones. I am going to try to answer each prompt once for the TV show and once for the books since a great many things differ. With that being said…

Day Three-Favorite House

This is one of those topics that greatly changes  from the TV show to the printed works of the A Song of Ice and Fire printed works. I do not mean just the novels but the greater world created by George RR Martin.

If we were to limit this answer to just the show and the books that the show is based on I think the most popular answer is House Stark. The are portrayed n the show and in the books as the main protagonists. Ned Stark is the main do-gooder of season one and everyone’s favorite Arya Stark’s arc shows us how she becomes a vengeful little bad ass.

That is not to say they are the most interesting house. I could make strong arguments for House Greyjoy, House Lannister, or even House Tyrell being very interesting in the books and on the show. However, when we look at all of the works in print set in Westeros one house stand alone as my favorite and the one we get the most history about.

That of Course is House Targaryen.

Without a doubt Danereys Targaryen is one of the most popular characters on the show and she is immensely popular to book readers as well. The only reason Robert Baratheon starts a rebellion and ultimately ends up sitting the Iron Throne is his reaction to the exploits of Rhaegar Targaryen. The popular Dunk and Egg books all deal with the history of this great house. On top of all that the new series of short stories that have been popping up here and there also deal with the lore and history of House Targaryen.

In the interests of full disclosure…the cat that is sitting on my lap is named Rhaegar…my cell phone case is the fire and blood logo of House Targaryen…and they are the rightful rulers of Westeros…Word.
