It is finally March and that means it is time for brackets. All kinds of brackets from College Basketball to dessert toppings and everything in between. With that in mind this blog will be doing a Star Wars authors bracket.
I am taking on the Vince McMahon role for this endeavor. That means I picked the authors who I felt most qualified to be considered. I don’t think I made any huge omissions but some of you may…This is the 32 authors I think have had the most impact on the Star Wars book universe and more importantly have entertained all the Star Wars book readers. They will be broken into four brackets; Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Yoda, and Grand Moff Tarkin. The Authors have been seeded 1 through 8 again most due to my own personal judgement while taking into consideration how the authors works are viewed by the readers at large.
With that being said I give you the eighth and final seed in the Luke Skywalker bracket:
Dave Wolverton was originally hired to write a book trilogy. The first of these books was The Courtship of Princess Leia. It did so poorly sales wise that the trilogy was scrapped and Wolverton would not get another shot at writing a novel for the Expanded Universe. This book is really a hot mess. Is worst sin is that it says Luke Skywalker is weilding a blue lightsaber even though every Star Wars fan from here to the Corellian System knows Luke’s blue lightsaber was lost during his first confrontation with Darth Vader. This book was so bad they had to ret-con the story with other books. This book was so bad they had to change the cover. I could go on but what is the point? Wolverton had a three book deal reduced to one and he never got another chance to write a novel in the EU.
On the other side of things this novel did introduce us to the planet Dathomir and their force using witches which would go on to become core components of EU stories post in this part of the timeline and in the prequel era where they were a major plot of Star Wars The Clone Wars. ON a more personal note it was while rereading this book that I decided to start the Star Wars book club.
He did go on to write many short stories that were published in the short story anthologies. He also would write and co-write many young adult readers. As an author I am not sold on Wolverton. As a writer of short stories and the like I think he does a better than average job.
As an eight seed Wolverton must win his first round matchup to earn a invitation to future tournaments. He will face one seed James Luceno and there is virtually no way I see that happening. Luceno moving on in the tournament is the surest thing this side of death and taxes. Fan voting begins Monday March 20th on Facebook and Twitter.
