Fan theories can be a lot of fun. They can also be extremely tedious. Fan theories are not likely very popular among the writers of the works the theories come from, but in the internet age fanboys and fangirls are going to use social media to discuss these things. It should really been looked at as a positive if people care enough to come up with theories that explain away parts of the story left ambiguous or murky they love the fandom and for the most part are only trying to make it better. With that being said I bring you fan theory Fridays where I look at one fan theory from one of my fandoms…
This edition we discuss if Boba Fett is the true murderer of Luke Skywalker’s Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru.
We know from the Special Edition version of A New Hope that Boba Fett was on Tatooine at the time of the murder. That gives him opportunity.
We know from the prequels that Boba Fett lost his father at the hands of Mace Windu. We learn from Star Wars The Clone Wars series that Boba is one angry little clone and that he holds a grudge against Mace and the Jedi.
We can also safely assume Boba has access to the information of Anakin Skywalker and it does not seem like much of a reach that he could make the connection between father Anakin and son Luke.
We also know that Boba Fett is a bounty hunter that is pretty ruthless. All of these things are established in movies and books…even though we have yet to see Boba Fett make an appearance in the new Disney timeline (to the best of my knowledge that is).
I think the germ of this theory comes from the funny fact that Stormtroopers by and large are not very effective with their blasters. When Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke find the burned out Sandcrawler Obi-wan points out that they attack could not have been Sand People because of their marksmanship. This is a pretty funny line given how often through out the rest of the Original Trilogy we see the Stormtroopers be pretty inept shots.
While it is reasonable to think Stormtroopers under orders from Darth Vader could and would torch a house…kill innocents…or commit other atrocities in the pursuit of their duties…the condition of bodies Luke encounters upon returning home is not consistent with people dying from blaster wounds. We can go as far as to say that Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru were incinerated. Stormtroopes do not tend to incinerate people…but ya know who does?
When we first meet Boba Fett on the big screen Darth Vader warns him about incinerating his targets. In the context of The Empire Strikes Back it is meant to show us the audience how ruthless Boba can be…in the larger context of the trilogy it seems to link him to the crime on Tattooine.
We also know from watching the prequels that Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader knows all about the Lars family and were they live. It does not seem like much of a reach that he would have outsourced their murder to Fett. The only real question would be would Darth Vader handle these murders himself?
This theory makes a lot of sense to me, and it seems we have firmly established that Fett had the means and the opportunity to carry out the extermination of the Lars’ family. Motive is a little tougher as we never see anyone hire him to do it, but given what we learn about the character in later works that take place before this in the timeline it seems to give him at least a superficial motive to want to hurt anything associated with the Jedi.
Overall this is a superior fan theory, now discuss it among yourselves or with me.
